Aston Villa Player Ratings vs Manchester City: Nicolas Jackson Shines as Teammate Suffers Nightmare Performance

Aston Villa delivered an impressive performance at Villa Park, defeating Manchester City 2-1 and bringing the visitors’ unbeaten start to the 2026-27 campaign to an end.
Nicolas Jackson was the standout performer, scoring twice to help Unai Emery’s side secure a memorable victory. The Senegalese striker opened the scoring just six minutes into the contest, showcasing his technical ability and composure with an excellent finish.
Manchester City responded shortly after the interval when Erling Haaland found the net with a header, putting pressure on the hosts. However, Villa refused to surrender their advantage and eventually restored their lead through Jackson, who completed his brace to secure all three points.
The result will undoubtedly please Emery, whose players combined attacking quality with determination to overcome one of the Premier League’s strongest sides.
Nicolas Jackson proves he offers more than goals
Jackson was undoubtedly Villa’s biggest attacking threat, but his contribution extended well beyond his two goals.
The forward demonstrated his ability to link up with teammates, create opportunities and cause persistent problems for Manchester City’s defence throughout the encounter.
His second goal was particularly impressive. Jackson recognised Ibrahim Mbaye’s movement and positioned himself perfectly to meet the resulting cross, finishing clinically to put Villa back in front.
His statistics also highlighted an outstanding individual display. According to FotMob, Jackson won six of his 11 ground duels, giving him a success rate of approximately 55 per cent. He also won both aerial duels he contested.
The striker’s work rate was equally impressive. Before being substituted in the 82nd minute, he had recorded more sprints than any other player in the match, demonstrating his willingness to press opponents, chase loose balls and drive Villa forward.
Jackson also completed both dribbles he attempted, further underlining his effectiveness in one-on-one situations.
Following Ollie Watkins’ departure, Villa needed a forward capable of leading the attack and delivering consistently in front of goal. Jackson’s latest performance suggests he is more than capable of shouldering that responsibility.
Ian Maatsen endures a difficult afternoon against Iliman Ndiaye
While Jackson enjoyed a memorable afternoon, Ian Maatsen struggled to make a positive impression against Manchester City.
The Dutch defender returned to Villa’s starting lineup but found himself under considerable pressure from Iliman Ndiaye, who repeatedly threatened down his flank.
Ndiaye’s ability to find dangerous positions caused Villa problems throughout the match. At the time of his withdrawal, the winger had recorded 11 touches inside the opposition penalty area, more than any other player in the contest.
His movement and attacking intent made life uncomfortable for Maatsen, who struggled to impose himself on the game.
One particularly dangerous moment came when Ndiaye delivered a cross that found Erling Haaland. However, Maatsen was not responsible for the defensive lapse that allowed the opportunity to develop.
The Villa defender also committed two fouls during the encounter, while his positioning and defensive responsibilities appeared to limit his opportunities to contribute going forward.
Although Emery may have instructed Maatsen to prioritise defensive duties against City’s attacking threats, his overall performance left considerable room for improvement.
