David Moyes Breaks Silence on Jack Grealish’s Shock Absence as Everton Boss Addresses Disciplinary Incident After Newcastle Victory

Everton manager David Moyes has refused to reveal further details surrounding Jack Grealish’s unexpected absence from the squad during the Toffees’ impressive 3-1 victory over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup fourth round.
The club announced shortly before kick-off that Grealish had been left out because of a disciplinary issue. According to reports from the Liverpool Echo, the decision was linked to the England international allegedly failing to attend a scheduled training session.
When questioned about the situation after the match, Moyes made it clear that the matter was an internal club issue and insisted that he fully supported the decision.
The Everton manager said:
“I don’t think I’m going to provide any details. It’s a decision made by the club, and I stand behind it.”
Asked whether he felt disappointed by the actions of Grealish, who became the first English footballer to command a £100 million transfer fee, Moyes declined to discuss the incident further.
The controversy surrounding Grealish could easily have affected Everton’s preparations, but Moyes was delighted with how the remaining players responded on the pitch.
The Scottish manager praised the squad’s mentality, highlighting the strong values within the club and the willingness of his players to support one another.
He explained that Everton have a group of players who understand the standards expected of them, both on and off the pitch.
Moyes also acknowledged the challenges of working with a relatively small squad but insisted that his team would continue fighting to remain competitive.
Reflecting on the victory, the Everton boss admitted that Newcastle had made life difficult for his side, describing the contest as a closely fought encounter.
However, he was particularly pleased with the timing of Everton’s goals, believing the third strike effectively ended Newcastle’s hopes of mounting a comeback.
Moyes stressed that progressing to the next round was the most important thing, regardless of how difficult the encounter had been.
Meanwhile, the Everton manager dismissed suggestions that the possibility of facing League Two side Fleetwood Town in the quarter-finals had provided extra motivation for his players.
According to Moyes, his attention was entirely focused on overcoming Newcastle rather than thinking about potential opponents in the next round.
He insisted that every Premier League fixture presents a significant challenge and warned his players against underestimating whoever comes next.
Moyes also acknowledged Fleetwood’s achievement in reaching the quarter-finals, pointing out that defeating Arsenal was an impressive accomplishment.
Everton will now turn their attention to the next challenge as they continue their Carabao Cup campaign, while questions remain over Grealish’s disciplinary situation and when the winger will return to the squad.
