Lamare Bogarde Comes Under Fire After Disappointing Aston Villa Display in Bournemouth Defeat

Aston Villa endured a difficult evening at the Vitality Stadium after suffering a convincing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, bringing their Carabao Cup campaign to an end. Unai Emery’s men struggled to make an impact throughout the encounter, with Amine Adli giving the hosts an early lead just seven minutes into the match before Lewis Cook and Alvaro Rodriguez added two more goals in the second half to complete a comfortable victory for the Cherries.
Although Emery opted to rotate his squad for the cup fixture, Villa still named a competitive starting lineup that was expected to deliver a much stronger performance. Unfortunately, several players failed to rise to the occasion, and one of those who particularly struggled was Lamare Bogarde, who was handed an opportunity to impress at right-back in place of Matty Cash.
The 22-year-old Dutch defender will have been hoping to use the opportunity to strengthen his position in Emery’s plans. However, his performance against Bournemouth is unlikely to have helped his chances of earning more regular playing time.
Lamare Bogarde Receives Criticism After Bournemouth Defeat
Bogarde has found first-team opportunities harder to come by this season, making just five appearances for Aston Villa across all competitions. This represents a significant decline from the previous campaign, when he featured 44 times for the club.
With his role in the squad becoming less prominent, the defender understands the importance of making a positive impression whenever Emery gives him an opportunity to play. His full 90-minute appearance against Bournemouth provided an ideal chance to demonstrate his quality, but his performance left plenty to be desired.
Birmingham Live journalist John Townley was particularly critical of Bogarde when assessing Villa’s players following the disappointing cup defeat, awarding him a rating of just three out of ten.
Townley highlighted the defender’s involvement in two costly moments during the match, pointing out that he was beaten by a ball over the top in the build-up to Bournemouth’s opening goal before giving possession away in the move that resulted in their third.
The journalist also questioned whether Bogarde has done enough to establish himself as a reliable option at right-back, suggesting that the Dutchman still has significant work to do to prove his suitability for the position.
Bogarde’s Statistics Against Bournemouth Raise Concerns
Bogarde’s individual performance was further reflected in his statistics from the match, with the defender struggling to make a meaningful impact at either end of the pitch.
He was directly involved in the build-up to Bournemouth’s third goal after attempting a blind pass around the corner that was intercepted by Tyler Adams. The Bournemouth midfielder quickly took advantage of the mistake, setting up Rodriguez, who finished past Aston Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot to complete the scoring.
According to Sofascore, Bogarde won just one tackle during the contest and completed only one of his three attempted dribbles. He also managed just one defensive contribution, numbers that highlighted his difficulties in making an impact throughout the game.
The defender lost possession on six occasions and registered only one key pass and one progressive carry. Even more concerning was his failure to record a single interception, clearance or blocked shot during the match.
Such statistics will raise questions about his ability to provide the defensive reliability and attacking support Emery expects from his right-backs. Although one disappointing performance does not necessarily define a player’s quality, Bogarde missed an important opportunity to strengthen his position within the squad.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka Could Benefit From Bogarde’s Struggles
Bogarde’s disappointing display could have consequences for his prospects of competing for a more regular role at Aston Villa, particularly with Matty Cash currently occupying the first-choice right-back position.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who is also expected to compete for the position when available, remains sidelined through injury. His absence had presented Bogarde with an opportunity to make a strong case for greater involvement in Emery’s plans.
Instead, the Dutchman’s struggles against Bournemouth may have weakened his chances of becoming Cash’s main backup once Wan-Bissaka returns to fitness.
Emery will now have to assess his defensive options carefully as Aston Villa turn their attention back to their other competitions. For Bogarde, the challenge will be to learn from his mistakes, improve his performances and demonstrate that he can be trusted when called upon.
Ultimately, his display against Bournemouth was a missed opportunity, and he may now face an even tougher battle to establish himself as a dependable option at right-back under Emery.
