Mike Dean Explains Controversial VAR Decision Behind Sunderland’s Penalty Against Coventry as Premier League Issues Statement
Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has weighed in on the controversial VAR decision that resulted in Sunderland being awarded a second-half penalty during their disappointing 3-1 defeat against Coventry City.
Régis Le Bris’ side endured another difficult afternoon at the CBS Arena, suffering a damaging defeat that left them rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.
Coventry were considerably stronger throughout the contest, with Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni all getting on the scoresheet to secure an impressive victory for the hosts.
The home side had already established a three-goal advantage by the 52nd minute, leaving Sunderland with a mountain to climb.
However, the visitors were given a lifeline in the 67th minute when referee Simon Hooper awarded them a penalty following a lengthy VAR review.
Enzo Le Fée stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick, sending goalkeeper Carl Rushworth the wrong way.
Despite reducing the deficit, Sunderland were unable to produce a comeback as Coventry comfortably protected their lead until the final whistle.
Mike Dean Explains Why Sunderland Were Awarded a Penalty Against Coventry
The biggest talking point from the incident involved Ethan Pinnock’s handball inside the Coventry penalty area.
Referee Simon Hooper initially waved away Sunderland’s appeals, but VAR officials Constantine Hatzidakis and Stuart Attwell recommended that the incident be reviewed on the pitchside monitor.
Hooper subsequently spent more than four minutes examining the situation before reversing his original decision.
Officials also had to establish whether Luke O’Nien was in an offside position before Robin Roefs’ long free-kick reached the penalty area.
O’Nien managed to bring the ball under control before attempting to get a shot away, with Pinnock’s arm position becoming the central issue during the review.
Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has explained the importance of the handball decision, while the Premier League Match Centre also released an official statement clarifying why the penalty was awarded.
The official statement read:
“After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of no penalty to Sunderland – with it deemed that Pinnock committed a handball offence after the position of his arm made his body unnaturally bigger and prevented a shot at goal.”
Enzo Le Fée Converts as Sunderland Fail to Rescue a Point
Following the referee’s decision, Le Fée took responsibility from the penalty spot and successfully converted his effort.
The Sunderland midfielder’s composed finish gave the travelling supporters renewed hope of witnessing a dramatic comeback.
However, Coventry refused to surrender their advantage and managed the closing stages of the encounter to secure all three points.
The result represents another setback for Le Bris, whose side urgently need to improve their performances if they are to climb away from the bottom of the Premier League
