Aston Villa Deliver Huge Blow to Manchester City as Nicolas Jackson’s Double Sparks Stunning Upset at Villa Park

Aston Villa 2-1 Manchester City: Villa End City’s Perfect Start With Impressive Victory

Aston Villa ended Manchester City’s perfect start to the Premier League season with an outstanding 2-1 victory at Villa Park, delivering an impressive performance to claim all three points.

The hosts took an early lead after Nicolas Jackson punished a defensive mistake involving Marc Guéhi, giving Villa the advantage just five minutes into the contest. Manchester City responded after the break, with Erling Haaland finding the net with a powerful close-range header to restore parity.

However, Jackson struck again around the hour mark, taking advantage of a difficult moment for goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to put Villa back in front. Despite City’s attempts to find another equaliser, Unai Emery’s side held on to secure a memorable victory and bring the visitors’ winning run to an end.

How the match unfolded

Aston Villa made four changes to the team that defeated Viking in the Champions League on Wednesday, with Johan Manzambi among those brought into the starting lineup following his recent impressive performances.

Manchester City’s most notable change was the return of Haaland to the starting eleven. The Norwegian striker had been dealing with injury concerns and was rested for Tuesday’s encounter against AEK Athens.

Villa initially threatened from a corner after Donnarumma was penalised for taking too long to restart play from a goal kick. Although the hosts failed to make the set-piece count, they soon found another opportunity to break the deadlock.

Jackson combined with John McGinn before taking advantage of City’s defensive uncertainty. The forward cut inside onto his right foot and unleashed a shot into the roof of the net, giving Villa an early lead and putting the visitors under immediate pressure.

City attempted to respond, with Iliman Ndiaye producing an impressive individual run in the 12th minute. The attacker dribbled past two Villa defenders before forcing Zion Suzuki into an important save.

Jackson subsequently tried to increase Villa’s advantage, driving towards the City defence before dragging his effort wide of the target.

Suzuki was called upon again shortly afterwards when Rayan Cherki attempted a sweeping effort, but the Villa goalkeeper reacted quickly to keep the ball out.

McGinn then delivered an intelligent pass behind City’s defensive line, forcing Josko Gvardiol to concede a corner. Donnarumma dealt with the resulting delivery by punching the ball clear.

Ndiaye continued to threaten and came close to drawing City level when his curling effort struck the post. The visitors were fortunate to avoid further damage when Villa appealed for a penalty after Manzambi collided with Elliot Anderson inside the box, but referee Peter Bankes dismissed the claims.

Guéhi became the first player to receive a yellow card after committing a foul on Jackson as the Villa forward attempted to break through on goal. Manzambi took responsibility for the resulting free-kick but sent his effort well over the crossbar.

Cherki was subsequently booked for a tactical foul on Manzambi, while Alysson later drove into the City penalty area looking to extend Villa’s advantage. However, Rúben Dias produced an excellent defensive intervention to deny him.

Despite the attacking opportunities at both ends, Villa maintained their 1-0 lead as the teams headed into the interval.

Haaland brings Manchester City back into the contest

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola made two changes at half-time, introducing Phil Foden and Rico Lewis in place of Cherki and Guéhi.

The changes soon paid off as City found an equaliser just seven minutes into the second half.

Ndiaye delivered a dangerous ball towards the back post, where Haaland positioned himself perfectly to meet the cross with a header. The striker directed his effort into the bottom corner, restoring parity and giving the visitors renewed hope of extending their perfect league record.

Manzambi received a yellow card for delaying the restart, while Matty Cash was also booked for a foul in midfield shortly after the goal.

City sensed an opportunity to take control of the match, and Gvardiol came close to putting them ahead moments later. The defender surged forward down the left flank before forcing Suzuki into an excellent save.

However, Villa refused to allow the visitors to build further momentum.

Jackson strikes again to restore Villa’s advantage

Villa responded with a substitution of their own, bringing Ibrahim Mbaye on for Alysson.

The replacement made an immediate impact, helping create the opportunity that allowed Jackson to score his second goal of the afternoon.

Around the hour mark, Jackson found space to shoot and sent the ball towards goal. His effort squeezed underneath Donnarumma, leaving the goalkeeper unable to prevent it from crossing the line.

The goal restored Villa’s lead at 2-1 and put City under renewed pressure as they searched for another response.

City continued to push forward, with Fernández delivering a dangerous corner five minutes later. Gvardiol met the delivery at the far post, but his header drifted wide.

Villa subsequently made a double substitution, withdrawing Manzambi and McGinn for Emiliano Buendía and Ross Barkley.

Suzuki remained an important figure for the hosts, producing another impressive save in the 68th minute to deny Gvardiol from close range.

City made another attacking change shortly afterwards, introducing Ryan McAidoo in place of Ndiaye as they attempted to find a way through Villa’s defence.

Anderson then became the fifth player to receive a yellow card after losing possession and making a late challenge in an attempt to recover the ball.

With ten minutes remaining, Villa made their final changes of the afternoon, replacing Jackson and João Gomes with Brian Madjo and Leon Goretzka. Madjo was subsequently booked for wasting time as the hosts looked to protect their advantage.

Villa survive late Manchester City pressure

Manchester City continued searching for a late equaliser as the final minutes approached, with Haaland once again coming close to rescuing a point for the visitors.

The striker connected with a header that appeared capable of finding the net, but Ian Maatsen produced a crucial goal-line clearance to preserve Villa’s narrow advantage.

That proved to be City’s final major opportunity, as Villa successfully defended their lead until the final whistle.

The result brought Manchester City’s perfect start to the league season to an end, while Aston Villa earned a significant victory through Jackson’s first-half and second-half goals.

Villa’s attacking quality, defensive determination and Suzuki’s important saves proved decisive, allowing the hosts to overcome one of the Premier League’s strongest sides and claim all three points at Villa Park.
