Keith Hackett Accuses Johan Manzambi of Trying to Win a Penalty During Aston Villa’s Victory Over Manchester City
Aston Villa secured an impressive victory over Manchester City after producing a determined performance at Villa Park, but one controversial penalty incident has sparked debate following the final whistle.
Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has criticised Villa midfielder Johan Manzambi, accusing the Swiss international of attempting to deceive the referee during a first-half incident involving Manchester City midfielder Elliot Anderson.
The incident occurred in the 30th minute when Manzambi drove forward into the penalty area before going to ground, hoping to win a spot-kick for the hosts.
However, referee Peter Bankes was unconvinced by the appeal and allowed play to continue. VAR subsequently reviewed the incident but supported the referee’s original decision, ruling that there was insufficient evidence to award a penalty.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Hackett insisted that the officials had made the correct decision, suggesting that Manzambi exaggerated the contact in an attempt to influence the referee.
The former FIFA referee said the Villa player appeared to manufacture contact to win a penalty, adding that the midfielder’s exaggerated backward movement was the clearest indication of what he believed was an attempt to deceive the officials.
Hackett maintained that the incident did not warrant a penalty, backing the decision to allow the game to continue.
Joleon Lescott Offers His Verdict on Aston Villa’s Penalty Appeal
Although Hackett was convinced that Villa did not deserve a penalty, former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott offered a slightly different perspective when discussing the incident on TNT Sports at half-time.
Manzambi’s appeal was the first of three penalty claims during the match, with the other incidents involving an Ian Maatsen challenge on Iliman Ndiaye and an alleged push by Joao Gomes on Enzo Fernandez.
Lescott believed the officials had made the right decisions on all three occasions, agreeing that none of the incidents clearly justified a spot-kick.
However, he suggested that Manzambi’s appeal might have carried more weight if the contact from Anderson had occurred around the leg rather than through their bodies.
According to Lescott, the nature and location of the contact were important factors in determining whether the incident should have resulted in a penalty.
His assessment suggested that Villa could have had a stronger argument under different circumstances, although he ultimately agreed with the decision not to award the spot-kick.
Aston Villa Secure Victory Despite Controversial Penalty Decision
Despite the debate surrounding Manzambi’s penalty appeal, Aston Villa had little reason to complain about the final outcome after delivering an impressive performance to claim all three points against Manchester City.
Unai Emery’s side demonstrated their quality and determination throughout the contest, competing strongly against one of the Premier League’s leading teams and taking advantage of their opportunities.
While the penalty incident could have changed the course of the match had the officials reached a different conclusion, the decision ultimately stood, with neither the referee nor the VAR team finding sufficient grounds to award a spot-kick.
Villa will now be able to focus on building on their impressive victory, while the debate over Manzambi’s actions is likely to continue among supporters and pundits.
For Emery and his players, however, the most important outcome was securing a memorable win over Manchester City, making the controversial penalty appeal a secondary talking point after an outstanding afternoon at Villa Park.
